Muscle Shoals Marches to Second Round

All Trojans.....in the fourth quarter.  After falling behind 14-0 the Trojans fought their way into a tie game only to see one play put them down again.  Muscle Shoals was in unfamiliar territory down 21-14 at the half.  The third quarter found the Trojans take a 10 point lead but had it cut to 31-27 by mid 4th Q.  On the kickoff Devan Sullivan ran about 160 yards all over the field in order to get inside the Chelsea 10.  Then the Trojans punched it in.  A Levi Fell interception and another TD  put the game away.  Junior RB Tyler Jackson led the Trojans rushing attack that gained 378 yards by getting 190 himself with 2 TD's.  Dee Liner and Zach Mize led the defense with 14 tackles each while Ethon Felton had 13.  In addition to Fells' interception he batted 5 balls down and contributed 5 tackles as well.  The Trojans finish the game 55-20 winners and will host Cullman next week in Round 2!

Trojans Trounce the Tigers!

Deshler comes into the game undefeated yet the Trojans treated them like they have all the region opponents this year.  They run all over them and shut them down defensively.  Rolling up nearly 250 yards rushing by halftime the Trojans were up 26-0 as they limited the Tigers rushing yards to 31. Not many times has Muscle Shoals been able to finish the game with 2nd and 3rd string players because they were so far ahead of Deshler.  Dee Liner had 10 tackles, Ethan Felton had 13.  Five different rushers had TD's as Dillon Gist led the way with 15 carries for 94 yards and a TD.  341 yards on the ground. The final was 39-14.  Total domination.  Both will host a playoff game next week.  Both should do well.  Coach Basden said "anytime you can beat a team like Deshler its good for your program." Tonight the Trojans looked like a team ready to play for several more weeks!

Bulldogs Comeback!

Two very good high school football teams battled tonight for their last regular season game of the season.  Both are in the playoffs. Central went up 13-0 early in the 3rd quarter and looked to be in control when Charles Jackson got loose twice for a 75 and 20 yard TD runs to tie the score at 13 as the Wildcats blocked the extra point to keep it even.  Jametrius Smith scored to tie it at 20 and then made an interception to set up the winning score. Jackson this time from 35 yards out with 1:05 to play in the game as he finished with 189 yards rushing after the entire offense was held to 61 yards in the first half. What a come back.  What an exciting finish to a great regular season.

Blowout!

Want to see a good close game?  Don't go see these teams play!  If you want to see domination these are the teams to watch.  Some teams tout a high powered offense...others a stingy defense.  These teams combine both to produce the largest point differential in the area.  These teams usually win by the largest margins.

Team                        Avg Margin of Victory
1. Muscle Shoals Trojans     34.6
2. Deshler Tigers                  27.2
3. Lauderdale County           22.4
4. Red Bay Tigers                 18
5. Shoals Christian                 17
6. Rogers Pirates                   15
7. Central Wildcats               13.5
8. Brooks Lions                    13

Region Standings for 5A and 4A

5A    Muscle Shoals has won their Region as have the Deshler Tigers.  But how do the rest of the teams shape up and who will they be playing?

TEAM     Record    Rgn W/L  Rgn Game left
1.  Muscle Shoals    7-0       6-1     Lee-Huntsville
2. East Limestone    6-2       5-1    Athens
3. Athens                 4-4       4-2     East Limestone
4. Russellville          3-5       3-3     Columbia
4. J.O. Johnson        5-3       3-3     Lawrence Co.
The Trojans will be at home against the Region 5 4th place team.  This is according to the AHSAA and is different from years past.  This Region is the Birmingham area.  Currently fourth place is Shelby County and Pinson Valley.  They play each other Friday night.  Russellville needs to win and Hope Johnson loses.  If so they will be the #4 and will travel to Briarwood Christian.

4A
4A has played a little less complicated barring any major upsets in Week 9.  Deshler will be at home against the Corner/Haleyville winner.  Brooks will be the #2 seed and will host Dora  while Central travels to Midfield.  Of course any major upsets in Region 5 could change that but dont expect any in this region.

Trojans on Top

Muscle Shoals now sits squarely atop the 5A Region 8 Standings.  They are a perfect 5-0 in region play and are looking to host the first round of the playoffs in a few weeks thanks to a 24-0 shutout of traditional power Russellville.  The Trojans forced 4 turnovers en route to yet another impressive win this season.  It was the first win over the Golden Tigers since any of these current players started grade school.  The first shutout since their grandparents were in high school (1974). Were it not for strong defensive stands in the red zone by the Russellville defense the score could have been worse.  The Trojans were stopped 4 times in the red zone - so they decided to strike from further out.  Tyler Jackson ran a 73 yard TD late in the second quarter to take a 17-0 halftime lead.  The Golden Tiger offense has been its strength all year long.  The Trojan defense held them to 186 total yards on the night.  Sophomore Ethon Felton led the effort with 14 tackles, 1 interception and a fumble recovery.  Junior, Dee Liner, also picked up a fumble and recorded 11 tackles.  Dillon Gist continued to carry the offensive workload with 13 carries for 122 yards while Tyler Jackson had 92 yards on only 4 carries.  The Trojans now find themselves in a new position.  On top looking down at the competition.  A win next week over JO Johnson would seal the first region title since 1988.

3 Yards and a Cloud of Dust!

Running between the tackles. Ball control. Time management. The Tigers did absolutely nothing fancy as they throw a total of 3 passes and run to the outside a total of three times but totally dismantle the Bulldog defense to the tune of 35 - 3. The Sheffield defense was on the field for 77 plays while the Bulldog offense managed only 26 plays. A very workmanlike, methodical, yet dominating performance by the Tigers. The offensive line helped the Tigers rush for over 250 yards against the areas #2 ranked scoring defense. CJ Jackson led the way with 122 yards on 20 carries. Brian Puckett was in the Sheffield backfield making plays behind the line and recovered a fumble as he led a solid defensive effort for the second week in a row. Sheffield struck first on their opening drive by kicking a 37 yard FG to take the lead 3-0 after Charles Jacksons 30 yard run. Then LCHS scored to go ahead 7-3 after a 15 play 53 yard drive in which no play went for over 7 yards. In the second quarter the Tigers take a 14 - 3 lead after a 9 play drive in which Jackson scores from 3 yards out and accounted for 43 of the 60 yards on the drive. The Tigers open the 3rd quarter with another long drive eating up 13 plays and 68 yards as Jake Newton scores for a 21-3 lead. After Hunter Haney forces a fumble and Puckett recovers, the Tigers finish off the Bulldogs with 2 more TD's in the fourth. The win moves LCHS to 6-1 on the year and a solid second in the region behind Rogers. Sheffield drops to 5-2 on the year and is also 4-1 in the region like LCHS but is behind them in the standings because of the head-to-head loss. Sheffield will host Rogers next week. A win could force a three way tie for the title while the Tigers will travel to Danville.

Bulldogs Bulldoze Devils!

Click to see pictures of the game
Make it 5 wins in a row now as Sheffield methodically destroyed the Red Devils from Elkmont 1 quarter at a time.  After taking a 7-0 lead the Bulldogs were able to push it to 14-0 before the half.  In the third quarter the Bulldogs scored on their first drive making it 21-0.  In the fourth they added another TD making it a 28-0.  Elkmont scored late but it was a 28-7 region win setting up the battle at Lauderdale County next week.

Tigers Score Early and Often!

On the very first drive the Tigers drove for a score.  It would prove to be one of many as the Tigers cruised to a 62 - 28 homecoming win over East Lawrence. Will Minor rushed 8 times for 127 yards and 4 TD's ...in the FIRST HALF alone!  Just when East looked to make a little noise and score two quick TD's in the 3rd Quarter cutting the lead to 48-20 Ricardo Carter intercepted a pass and raced 68 yards for the Touchdown and a 54-20 lead.  Each team scored once more for the final margin.  Next week Deshler will host West Limestone for first place in the Region.
